This hypoeutectoid steel (bar material with ⌀ = 14 mm) with 0.34 % carbon (measured with OES) was normalised at 900 °C and then slowly cooled in the furnace. The microstructure consists of ferrite and fine-grained pearlite, typical for this material and heat treatment condition. The edge layer is covered with scale (dark grey) and shows a surface decarburisation of approx. 190 µm. The average core hardness is 158 HV5.
