Shipbuilding steel E40

In order to withstand the conditions on the high seas, shipbuilding steels with high strength, toughness and corrosion resistance have been developed, which must also be easy to weld. The grades range from A to F and are categorised according to their strength properties.

This sample contains 0.16% C and 1.5% Mn and achieved 550 MPa tensile strength and 27% elongation at break. The normally annealed microstructure shows pearlisation in the rolling direction.

The hardness is 164 HV 30.
