This cast steel is used, for example, for furnace parts at low mechanical stress; this sample is from a grate bar. Solidification was austenitic with about 30% ledeburite containing M7C3 carbides instead of cementite M3C. The environment of the Cr-containing carbides is depleted in chromium and is therefore even etched by Nital. The microstructure in the dendrites contains perlite as well as bainite and/or martensite.
