Schmitz-Metallographie’s First Online Shop
A Concept Unique in Europe
On 19 March 2007, Schmitz-Metallographie launched an online shop that was unprecedented in Europe at the time. While major competitors were still years away from establishing their first online shops, the company based in Herzogenrath had already introduced a concept that set new standards in the traditional metallography industry: transparent pricing, accessible at any time and without mandatory registration. No need to request a catalogue, no need to email a sales representative – the price list was immediately available to every customer, 24 hours a day.
With this digital initiative, Schmitz-Metallographie positioned itself as one of the early pioneers in the German-speaking market, establishing a new benchmark for the industry.
Technical Features and Product Range
The new shop offered the complete catalogue of metallographic consumables and equipment, including cutting discs, hot- and cold-mounting compounds, grinding papers, polishing products and small equipment, in two languages: German and English. This gave Schmitz-Metallographie’s customers – quality departments and testing laboratories – direct access to the current product range, regardless of business hours or geographical boundaries. Real-time availability information, transparent pricing and time-saving order processing significantly reduced communication barriers. The registration of key domain names related to metallography, such as www.metallographiebedarf.de and others, also demonstrated considerable foresight in the early 2000s.
Of particular significance was the fact that the online shop not only opened up new opportunities to serve existing customer groups but also reached smaller laboratories and new customers who wanted to research products and place orders independently. The combination of solid vocational training as a materials tester (providing in-depth product expertise), established sales experience and digital infrastructure created a sustainable competitive advantage.
Expert Technical Advice Without a Field Sales Force
Contrary to a widespread expectation, the online shop did not replace personal service – it consistently complemented it. Schmitz-Metallographie combined online shop technology with expert advice by telephone. Technical specialists were, and continue to be, available to customers to answer questions, help select the right sample preparation method and resolve technical problems. The current downloadable catalogue, complete with prices and specifications, was made available directly on the website – no detours, no waiting times, just the information customers needed.
The Legacy of Early Digitalisation
What was considered a technological innovation in 2007 is now standard practice. Yet Schmitz-Metallographie had already recognised that, even in a traditional industry, a pioneering spirit can provide a lasting competitive advantage. The online shop did not operate in isolation; rather, it represented a strategic extension of the company’s existing product portfolio. Quality, availability and expert advice remained the core pillars of the business – now digitally connected and accessible around the clock.
The company’s growth potential lay not in replacing traditional structures, but in complementing and accelerating them.
