Induction hardening of this unalloyed structural steel has created a purely martensitic edge layer approx. 1.7 mm thick.
In the transition area, bainite, pearlite and ferrite formation begins at a depth of approx. 2 mm. The ferrite has formed mainly along grain boundaries, creating a ferrite network.
The intervening microstructure contains martensite (light brown), finely striated perlite (troostite, dark brown-black) as well as lower bainite (light, acicular).
The core structure consists of partly network- and needle-shaped ferrite (Widmannstätten ferrite) and coarser-striped perlite.
