In the unetched state, the typical manganese sulfides can be seen, which facilitates tooth production (slotting or milling) due to short-breaking chips. To produce a wear resistant tooth flank, the component was case-hardened. The CHD = 0.1 mm was not achieved here. The hardness at 0.1 mm depth was only approx. 450 HV0.5.
