Numeric designation1.1191
Chemical designationC45E
StateNormalised at 850 °C (furnace cooling)
Etching3% Nital

This hypoeutectoid steel (bar material with ⌀ = 20 mm) with 0.43% carbon (measured with OES) was normalised at 850 °C and then slowly cooled in the furnace. The microstructure, typical for this material and heat treatment condition, consists of ferrite and fine- and ultra-fine-grained pearlite. The surface layer is covered with scale (dark gray) and shows a surface decarburisation of approx. 150 µm. The average core hardness is 174 HV5.
