This hypereutectoid steel (bar stock with ⌀ = 16 mm) was austenitized at 840 °C for 30 min, quenched in oil, and then tempered at 180 °C for 2 hours. The microstructure consists of martensite with finely distributed, brightly shining carbides. At low magnification, a slightly network-like structure is still visible.

The average core hardness is 746 ± 6 HV1.
