State+QW +T Annealed on cementite network, hardened and tempered (quenchant: water)
Etching3% Nital

This hypereutectoid steel (bar stock with ⌀ = 16 mm) was first annealed on cementite network (initial condition: see Case Study 13-10) and subsequently austenitized at 840 °C for 30 min, quenched in oil and finally tempered at 180 °C for 2 hours.
The microstructure consists of coarsely needled, tempered martensite with bright, finely dispersed carbides. Slight segregation lines and some non-metallic inclusions (MnS) are visible in the longitudinal direction.

The core hardness is 763 ± 2 HV1.

Condition:

  • 950 °C / 60 min / oven
  • 840 °C / 30 min / oil – 180 °C / 2 h / air
