This hardened, stainless rolling bearing ball has “loosened carbides” in the area near the surface. Cause of formation of the small flaws within the carbides are high and “fast” degrees of deformation which will negatively affect the life span. If these small flaws are located in the area of the Hertzian pressure, pitting is inevitable. The microstructure consists of small primary as well as dissolved carbides in a martensitic matrix.
