The microstructure of this stainless, austenitic chromium-nickel spring steel is in the strain-hardened state. It consists predominantly of strain-induced martenite with residual austenite, which can be easily recognized by the twins. Furthermore, typical for this higher carbon content, fine-dispersed chromium carbides are present on the grain boundaries and in the grain interior, which reduce the corrosion resistance. Furthermore, the (intergranual) corrosion resistance is further reduced with increasing strain hardening.
