Blue slag

Chemical designationBlaue Schlacke
Etching3 % Nital

The slag pebbles were found in the Schwarzwasser near Aue in the Erzgebirge. Blue slag residues are found in many places in the vicinity of former ironworks from the early modern age. According to X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), the slag is essentially a glassy solidified (Fe,Ca,Al,Mn,K) silicate. The high iron content indicates the age of the find; today’s slags would not contain as much iron. The larger metallic inclusions consist of pearlitic steel.
