This heat-resistant austenitic steel casting is commonly used for components such as chain links or fan wheels in heat treatment plants. It exhibits increased resistance, even in carburizing atmospheres. Along the interdendritic cracks, the fine carbides have been dissolved by oxidation of chromium and carbon, hence the bright fringes. On the crack flanks themselves, at least two different oxide types can be distinguished by their gray shades.
