This lead-free special brass alloy, which is particularly easy to cast – the cast version of the wrought alloy CW724R | CuZn21Si3P (Cuphin) – impresses with its outstanding mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. It is also considered resistant to stress corrosion cracking and dezincification, and contains no lead, arsenic or nickel whatsoever. Due to these properties, it is used in particular in the manufacture of fittings, in drinking water installations and in food technology. The sample contains approx. 18% Zn, 3% Si and 0.06% P.
The microstructure consists of alpha (fcc, dark), kappa (hcp, light) and gamma phases (small, blue-grey). Alpha contains slightly more zinc and less silicon than kappa, is therefore less refined and is more heavily etched.
The hardness is 143 HV 0.2.
