CW617N | CuZn40Pb2 Stress corrosion cracking

Numeric designationCW617N
Chemical designationCuZn40Pb2
StateStress corrosion cracking
Etchingungeätzt

This brass component from an angle shut-off valve broke after approx. 6 months in use.
The cause of the damage was transcrystalline stress corrosion cracking, despite the low hardness of 104 HV0.5. Component stresses due to installation or overtightening of the valve cannot be ruled out.

A comparative fracture showed a pure honeycomb fracture. Subsequently, dezincification occurred on part of the fracture surface.
