Casting alloy with very good strength properties, self-hardening by precipitation of MgZn2. Here in the example: tensile strength 290 MPa, elongation at break 2.5%, hardness 105 HBW2.5/62.5.
The microstructure is essentially Al mixed crystal and Al-Si eutectic, the coarser light gray or blue precipitations are probably Mg2Si and intermetallic Al-Si-Fe(Mn) compounds. Most of the zinc is dissolved in the Al mixed crystal. The large brightness differences in the etched microstructure are due to the strong segregation of zinc within the eutectic colonies.
