The recrystallised grains in this welding wire could only be made visible using Barker etching (and a polarising filter). Without a polarising filter, the etching pattern does not differ from NaOH etching, which only attacks the interfaces between Al and Si. This also removes small pieces of matrix between two Si precipitates.
