The component was nitrocarburised in molten salt at approx. 580°C (Tenifer process) and subsequently oxidised.

The process control was not optimal in this case: The desired transition layer is very thin and uneven, and the oxide layer is also of uneven thickness. Beneath the transition layer, only very few individual iron nitride needles are visible. Before embedding, the section was wrapped tightly in aluminium foil to ensure good contrast between the grey oxide layer and the grey embedding medium.
