This hypoeutectoid steel (bar material with ⌀ = 20 mm) with 0.59 % carbon (measured with OES; nominal: 0.57 – 0.65 %) was austenitised for 30 min at 850 °C, quenched in water and then tempered at 250 °C for 2 hours. The microstructure consists entirely of tempered (cubic) martensite at the edge, with more and more finely streaked perlite (troostite) gradually forming as the edge distance increases. The core structure thus consists of  cubic martensite and fine-striped perlite.

The average core hardness is 579 HV5.
