1.2210 | 115CrV3 +QO +T Hardened and tempered (quenchant: oil)

Numeric designation1.2210
Chemical designation115CrV3
State+QO +T Hardened and tempered (quenchant: oil)
Etching3% Nital

This hypereutectoid steel (bar material with ⌀ = 30 mm) with 1.28 % carbon (measured with OES; nominal: 1.1 – 1.25 %) was austenitised at 810 °C for 30 min, quenched in oil and then tempered at 250 °C for 2 hours.
The 115CrV3 is a shell hardener. The critical cooling rate was not reached. At the edge the hardness is 400 HV5 and at 11.5 mm depth 336 HV5. Structural differences – apart from an edge decarburisation – are not visible under the light microscope.
Perlite with spherical carbides is present. The difference in hardness is related to the finer lamella spacing of the perlite in the area near the surface.
