Numeric designation1.2210
Chemical designation115CrV3
State+QO +T Hardened and tempered (quenchant: water)
Etching3% Nital

This hypereutectoid steel (bar material with ⌀ = 30 mm) with 1.28 % carbon (measured with OES; nominal: 1.1 – 1.25 %) was austenitised at 810 °C for 30 min, quenched in water and then tempered at 250 °C for 2 hours.
The 115CrV3 is a shell hardener. The critical cooling rate was reached at the edge compared to oil quenching. The steep drop in hardness starts at about 4 mm depth.

At the rim the hardness is 737 HV5 and at 11.5 mm depth 392 HV5. In the marginal area there is tempered martensite and at a depth of 11.5 mm a pure pearlitic structure with spherical carbides.
