In a test, the heat-resistant steel casting was exposed to K2SO4 (melting point 1069 °C) and heated up to 1100 °C in air. In addition to the surface oxidation of primarily chromium and silicon, the sulfate melt results in the formation of chromium sulfides with portions of iron and manganese sulfide.
