EN-GJS-500-7 | 5.3200 | Tool life problems in machining

Numeric designation5.3200
Chemical designationEN-GJS-500-7
StateTool life problems in machining
Etching3% Nital

When machining sealing surfaces, the tool life of the indexable inserts was increasingly reduced (1/3). The housings made of EN-GJS-500-7 were supplied by two different foundries. The factory certificates only contained information on the chemical composition, mechanical parameters from the tensile test were completely missing.

The metallographic examination impressively shows that in the housing with good machinability there is only approx. 20% pearlite (basic hardness 173 HBW2.5/187.5) and in the housing with tool life problems approx. 80% pearlite (basic hardness 220 HBW2.5/187.5) in the area near the surface.

Graphite classification of both samples according to EN ISO 945-1:2019

  • Graphite shape VI
  • Size: 6

The graphite size differs minimally in the peripheral area; in the core it is of the same order of magnitude.
