After a failure, the furnace roll was probably overheated locally, at temperatures unknown. The interdendritic Cr-rich M23C6 carbides are partially rounded, and tiny secondary carbides have precipitated locally. How the eutectic-looking microstructure zones have formed is yet unknown. Compare the normal as-cast microstructure of this alloy under this link.
