Compared to non-infiltrated steels of the same density, copper-infiltrated sintered steels have higher electrical and thermal conductivity and better machining properties. According to the manufacturer, FX-1008 can contain 8-14% Cu; the component analysed contains around 9% Cu. Presumably, pre-alloyed Fe-Cu powder was added and not subsequently infiltrated with Cu, as the copper is evenly present in the entire component cross-section. The larger pores remain free of copper as the capillary forces in them are insufficient. The component was also vapour oxidised. The resulting Fe3O4 layer (in this case supplemented by copper oxide) fills the open porosity somewhat, thereby increasing the density and strength in the edge area. The carbon content is approx. 0.7% (estimated from the ferrite:pearlite ratio).
The core hardness is 190 HBW 2.5/187.5, the surface hardness in the hardened edge is 285 HBW 2.5/187.5.
