| Chemical designation | TiAl6V4 |
| State | heat treated at 1050 °C, alpha-case |
| Etching | Kroll |
During the heat treatment in air, a surface layer of alpha-titanium (alpha-case, white) was formed by oxygen diffusion. A surface layer of alpha-titanium (alpha-case, white) was formed. The base material – at high temperature initially pure beta phase – partially transforms into alpha on cooling, the result is a fine microstructure of alpha and beta plates. As a beta stabilizer, vanadium accumulates in the alpha grains, so that the adjacent (formerly pure beta) matrix contains significantly more V.
