Wire rope friction martensite

Etching3% Nital

This broken wire rope exhibits a WEA (White Etching Area) on the surface. The WEA can occur when the wire rope is pulled over a sharp edge under load, for example. The WEA is the starting point for a crack. The basic structure exhibits a typical, patented microstructure. In the unetched state, an undesirably long non-metallic inclusion is present.
