Numeric designation1.7131
Chemical designation16MnCr5
StateNormalised at 950 °C (furnace cooling)
Etching3% Nital

This hypoeutectoid steel (bar material with ⌀ = 30 mm) with 0.14 % carbon (measured with OES) was normalised at 950 °C and then slowly cooled in the furnace. The microstructure consists, typical for this material and heat treatment condition, of ferrite and fine- and ultra-fine-grained pearlite. The edge layer is covered with scale (dark grey) and shows surface decarburisation. The average core hardness is 150 HV5.
