Numeric designation5.3109
Chemical designationEN-GJS-500-14
StateGraphite classification and fracture appearance in tensile test
Etching3% Nital

The microstructure of this ductile iron consists of ferrite. The graphite formation is slightly degenerate. The minimum tensile strength is 500 MPa, the minimum elongation at fracture is 14%.
An increasing pearlite content in the microstructure is therefore not a reliable indication of a higher strength grade. In this example, the increase in strength is achieved by solid solution hardening with Si.

Graphite classification according to EN ISO 945-1:2019

  • Graphite form VI
  • Guide number for the size range: 7

The SEM images show a force fracture by tensile testing. A quasi-cleavage fracture is present, as honeycomb fracture and cleavage fracture alternate.
