Borided coatings on Ni-based alloys usually contain mixtures of several nickel borides: NiB, Ni2B, Ni3B and/or Ni4B3. The friable outer layer (see Fig. 5) consists of nickel silicide(s). These typically form during boriding of Ni-base alloys due to competitive siliciding, the layer is usually removed by polishing.
